ScarletMadeline's Makeup Mastermind Answers Your Questions

Last week I got quite a few questions about makeup application and this week I am going to give you the some answers!

What are some good mascaras?

I am not a fan of most drug store mascaras because about 80% of them test on animals. Animal Tested Brands Include: Maybelline and Covergirl. Of course am I big fan of Darla Makeup Mascara, thats why I developed it. Revlon, Almay and Physicians Formula are also cruelty free. I am NOT a fan of waterproof mascaras, they can damage your eyelashes.

AnnePopRock: yes you can shake the mascara, just dont pump it :)

xdcrosseyedxd: Try using a regular eyelash curler and then applying a good plumping mascara. That should get your lashes curled. Let me know if it works!

What Style of Cat eye is in This Season?

Curled up liquid liner (like above) is SOO out this season.

My favorite trend right now with makeup, is creating a cat eye with the eyeshadow itself using a straight edge (like a tissue). This looks so much more mature and creative.

xbellabanzaiii Wanted to Know some good ways to get rid of acne:

As I have mentioned before, I am a HUGE fan of organic apple cider vinegar. Its cheap and its THE BEST thing I have tried. Before bed each night watch your face with an exfoliating wash (drug store is fine, but make sure its cruelty free). Then go over the face and extract any blackheads or pimples that you have. Take a cotton ball and soak it with apple cider vinegar and hold it down at for a few seconds all over your face. It will sting and smell pretty bad but trust me by morning your face will look way better.

Rachael Wanted to Know Plumping Lips:

Lip plumping products usually do only work for a few minutes, there is no real way to keep your lips looking plump for a long time. I know that cinnamon oil is a great do it yourself lip plumper. It stings quite a bit but works pretty well, and is pretty cheap in comparison to lip glosses that just have small traces of cinnamon in them.

How to Make Her Eyes Look Bigger and Still Wear Eyeliner:

The key to making your eyes look bigger is to keep dark colors away from your lash lines. I have more squinty eyes and to open them up I apply a lighter color to my lash line and put darker colors on the creases of my eyelid.

Twiggy's makeup is a great example of this. The white on her lash line (she still can wear liquid liner with this look) gives the allusion that her eye is wider then it actually is.

If you have smaller eyes stray away from the raccoon eye look. Apply a dark colored eyeshadow under your eye as a liner, instead of a pencil.

aimieberry Wanted to Know How to Keep Her Eyeliner on:

Make sure you use a shadow base on your eye (top and bottom) before applying any cosmetics. Then top it with the same powder that you put all over your face. The reason that your eyeliner is smearing all over is from tears and facial oils. Make sure to get some REALLY good waterproof eyeliner. I use Darla Makeup Eyeliner and so do many female musicians because it stays on all day and during sweaty shows.

How To Keep Your Foundation From Getting that "Cracking" Look:

If your foundation is starting to crack is it probably because your face is dry. Apply a good moisturizer before you apply your makeup. That should help :) Also, try a pressed mineral foundation. That may work better.

I get asked a lot what hair color I use. I use Paul Mitchell color. It requires quite the up keep (I get my hair colored about once every 2 or 3 weeks). Luckily my mom is a hair dresser, so that makes my life a lot easier.

I would also like to add that I do not wear a "bump-it." I tease my hair the good old fashion way :)

Please submit some more questions and comments about makeup and I will be sure to answer them in upcoming journals!

ScarletMadeline's Makeup Mastermind Looks At The Foundations For a Beautiful Makeup Look

This week I decided to focus on makeup tips that everyone can use no matter what look they are trying to pull off. This is a collection of my favorite tips and pete peeves that will help you build the foundation of a super fabulous look!

FACE:

I am a HUGE supporter of PRESSED mineral foundations/powders. They are all in one and they cover flaws really well. My favorite brand is Glo Minerals, its a bit of a splurge but its amazing!

Make sure that you always put a shadow base/concealer on your eyelid and under your eyes. Try and get a color that is a couple shades lighter then your skin tone and then even out the color with the mineral makeup powder (about 2 shades lighter then your skin) over the top.

One of my biggest pet peves is when people use lighter powder to highlight their foreheads, nose and under eyes. Tyra Banks is of course beautiful but she is guilty of doing this way too often. YUCK!

If you pick up any Vogue right now you will see that going tanning or wearing bronzer is OUT OF FASHION. Catherine Zeta-Jones was guilty of applying WAYYY too much bronzer (at least wear matte bronzer if you insist) in this picture. If you are fair skinned, embrace it.. Its very hot right now, and thank goodness because I'm practically albino!

On the other hand, make sure you dont look like you are washed out and dead like J-Lo in this picture. JEEEZE!

EYES:

All I am going to say is Kim Kardashian's eye makeup looks ridiculous (it matches her dress tho! ha). Most teenage girls do this exact same look with black eyeliner, and ITS TIME FOR GIRLS TO BE MORE CREATIVE WITH THEIR MAKEUP!

TIP: Apply black eyeliner just to the water lines of your eyes. Apply a black or brown eyeshadow under your eye as a blended liner, this adds more depth and looks more mature.

Most people dont realize that mascara needs to be replaced about once every 2 months or so. If it dries out it will look cakey and gross on your eyes. Dont pump your mascara brush in the tube, that will just get air trapped and dry it out faster.

TIP:If you are looking to get awesomely long and plump lashes without applying falsies, apply a few coats of mascara.

Rounded cat eyes are SO out this season so try something more edgy and angled like Katy Perry.

TIP: Use a tissue as an angled straight edge to get your eyeshadow straight and also to collect eyeshadow dust. I use this technique every day.

Next week I want to answer your questions!

Submit your questions to this post and next week they will be answered :)

What A Crazy and Fun Week

Hey Everyone!

This past week was a lot of fun and went by WAYYY too fast. Ever feel like your life is flashing before your eyes? I keep having this feeling like I am running outa time and I have to get everything done I want to get done before its too late! I guess thats a good way to live though, you only live once right?

On Wednesday I went to the Rave in Milwaukee and met up with the HILARIOUSLY funny boys from Suicide Silence. I had never met them before but I had a BLAST with them and I look forward to hanging out with them again. We did a little interview which was great and I hung out with them til about 1230 and headed home.

I keep having major insomnia and cant fall asleep til 6 or 7 in the morning and its really starting to annoy me. I dont have a problem working all night because that is when I feel most inspired. Unfortunately a good majority of the world isnt on the same schedule as me so I gotta get up and live by their schedule for meetings, phone calls, etc.

On Thursday I went back to the rave to interview two of the guys from Saosin and Eye Alaska. Chris and Beau from Saosin are too funny and talk a lot! Its going to be a great interview and Im looking forward to hearing what all of you think of it :)

This weekend I am finishing up editing ALL of my interviews, yes I am actually going to hunker down and get it done. I only have about 7 more to do so it shouldnt be toooo bad.

Tonight my friend Alaina is walking in a fashion show in Madison so I am going to head out there for that. Should be tons of fun, looking forward to seeing some cute clothes!

Next week I am going to buy a white sweep online and start doing makeup tutorials for DarlaMakeup.com and also for my buzznet features.

What Kind of makeup tips do you want to see?

What bands do you want me to interview?

I am interviewing Every Avenue next week, what questions do you want me to ask them?

ScarletMadeline's Makeup Mastermind: The Guy-Liner Trend is SO over! The Transformation of Pete, Trace and Davey in 2009.

ScarletMadeline's Makeup Mastermind: The Guy-Liner Trend is SOO Over! The Transformation of Pete, Trace and Davey in 2009.

In the last few months it seems like the guyliner trend is going OUT the door. It seems like as the most popular guyliner trend followers are getting out the eye makeup remover as they get older.

PETE WENTZ

BEFORE: Now I cant say anything about Pete and his guyliner, because he always has looked great (in my opinion). Pete is THE trend setter (of our generation) when it comes to men's eye makeup. Although, I have to admit that I have never been a big fan of guys in makeup, even Pete's.

AFTER: Last month Pete Wentz had his head shaved on stage. Since that night it really seems like Petey's look has drastically changed (in a darn good way). He looks so clean cut and mature! This is why men shouldn't wear eye liner, because they look SOO much better without it.

DAVEY HAVOK

BEFORE: Now I think we all know how I feel about this mess of a look on Davey. Im sorry, but long finger nails, smokey eyes and lace finger decore will never be attractive to me.. SO THANK GOODNESS THAT IS OVER!

AFTER: It seems like with the release of AFI's new album, Davey has reinvented himself. I never thought that I would say this, but Davey got hot! Im digging the scruffy face and short nails. I especially like that he looks like a GUY! I may have to go see AFI now to see his marvelous transformation in real life!

TRACE CYRUS

BEFORE: I am a definitely a Metro Station fan.. I mean really, who doesn't like to shake it? Trace is a good looking boy but I was NOT into the eyeliner he use to wear. It was just pushing the stereotypical "scene kid" look too far.

AFTER: Trace definitely stopped wearing eyeliner, but instead replaced it with tattoos on his face. I think he can totally pull it off now because he's young, but I always wonder what people with this many tattoos will look like when they are 50??  If he feels good about them though, that is all that matters right? Anyone else looking forward to Metro Station's new album??

How do you feel about all these musicians new looks?

I know my mother would KILL me if I got tattoos on my face (even though I am too scared of needles to do it anyways), how do you think your parents would feel if you had many tats as Trace?

If you could have any of these guys do YOUR makeup who would you choose? I would let Davey do mine. He is REALLY good.. I just don't like the makeup on him.

My weekend adventure and interview with Forever The Sickest Kids

I have been sick for literally two weeks, so I had some MAJOR cabin fever and needed to get out of the house!

I felt better on Friday so, I went to the Rave to interview Forever The Sickest Kids. It seems that for the last year I am always running into these guys so it was fun to interview em and hang out again. Super fun boys!

When I got there, Jonathan showed me some magic tricks. He is one tricky guy! I cant even shuffle cards so I was impressed haha

The interview was funny. I will post it soon. I have to edit it quite a bit because it is literally a half hour long!

We hung out for a bit and then I went inside to watch them play and meet up with some other friends. I have never seen them play before, they are really good live! I suggest going to check em out on the Cheap Date Tour (going on right now). I am going to be honest, I dont know a whole lot of their music but after seeing em I will definitely listen to more songs. Plus, they have a ginger kid in the band so they must be good right? I did however know the song "Woah Oh" and danced my booty off.

After the show Caleb, Kyle, my friend Alaina and I went to a little diner across the street for some food. Last week when I was super sick I was diagnosed with Gastro intestinal reflux disorder. Which basically means I cant eat anything greasy or acidic or I will be in a lot of pain. BUMMER! So all I drank was tea. But darn, was that some good tea!

For Halloween, I got dressed up as Amy Winehouse (pictures coming soon)! I was shocked that people knew who I was, since I was the ginger version. I met up with my friend Ashley down in Chicago and we went to go meet up with FTSK at their Halloween show at the House of Blues. I got all the way down there and realized that the show ended an hour earlier! I felt SOOO bad that I missed it. Luckily, I met up with em and visited for a bit before going to another party on the other side of town.

It was quite the adventure driving all over Chicago. Usually the unplanned adventures are the best. I met lots of fun people and was up til 7AM hanging out.

I will have a lot more pictures up soon!

What did you all do for Halloween?

What did you dress up as?
